Research interests

Ko Koens joined the Academy of Hotel and Facility Management in 2013 and currently works as Associate Professor. Ko earned his PhD in Responsible Tourism from Leeds Beckett University with a research project on the market access of small township tourism businesses and holds a master in Social Psychology and Environmental Studies (both at Utrecht University). He is project leader of the JPI Urban Europe (Horizon 2020) funded project ‘Smart City Hospitality’ (SCITHOS).

His research interests are sustainable urban tourism, slum tourism city hospitality, visitor pressure, small businesses and local economic development. Ko also is active as expert on sustainable urban tourism development at the Centre of Expertise Leisure Tourism and Hospitality (CELTH).
