In 2019, Jeroen was appointed as a professor on the topic 'Social Impacts of Tourism'. Via the professorship, Jeroen has the ambition to provide knowledge, instruments, and assistance to places that want to have tourism contribute, via its social and economic impacts, to becoming attractive to recreate, live and work in. The professorship is based on a contextual approach: Depending on the local context (the characteristics of the place and its users) places need different knowledge and different methods. Concretely, the professorship will:

      (1) Apply a broad range of instruments to measure and monitor impacts.

      (2) Improve the quality of impact measurement by developing new instruments and by exchanging knowledge with other institutions carrying out impact analyses.

      (3) Help places by gaining and providing knowledge on impact management strategies, answering questions such as:
      • How to go from a focus on quantity (tourism growth) to quality and from short-term to long-term?
      • How to select and market to ‘desired’ types of tourists?
      • How to design places with sufficient capacity, that stimulate positive interactions between tourists and other users?
      • What are the roles of the government, communities, companies, and individuals in managing impacts?
      • What possibilities are offered by ICT / ‘smart’ solutions?

      (4) Contribute to the public and academic debate

The professorship is firmly embedded in the research and educational programs of the Breda University of Applied Sciences and is based upon a belief in cooperation. This includes cooperation with places/destinations, other professorships, other research institutes, tourism entrepreneurs, etc.

tourism economics, economic and social aspects of sustainability, economic impact modelling, social impacts of tourism.
