Research interests

Harald Warmelink (PhD) is a senior research project leader at Breda University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. His research projects are on the intersection of game studies and organization studies. More specifically, he works on the design, use and evaluation of serious games for policy analysis, decision-making, management and organization, as well as their gamification. His projects are affiliated to the three professorships of Igor Mayer, Mata Haggis-Burridge and Marnix van Gisbergen.

He occasionally teaches to students of tourism, logistics, media or gaming, mostly about the design and evaluation of serious games and gamifications. He also taught in game design and development courses or curricula at Delft University of Technology (faculty of Technology, Policy and Management) and HKU University of the Arts Utrecht (School of Games & Interaction). At HKU he helped redesign the Creative Media and Game Technologies curriculum.

He obtained his PhD degree at Delft University of Technology (faculty of Technology, Policy and Management) in 2013 with the thesis ‘Towards Playful Organizations’, for which he won the German Simulation and Gaming Award in 2015. He is the author of the book Online Gaming and Playful Organization (2014, Routledge) and has published in diverse journals, including British Journal of Educational Technology, Simulation and Gaming, Journal of Business Research, and Organization Studies.
