Description
I hosted a workshop on the Dual Careers of Young Athletes – a project initiated by Lauren Logush, exploring how young athletes could balance a sporting career with education and/or work. Adolescence is a critical time when it comes to identity exploration, a time during which questions such as ‘Who do I want to be?’ and ‘How do I want to be seen?’ are key. For many young athletes, their athlete identity becomes most dominant to their sense of self. While a focus on sports can lead to great achievements (which I personally envy), it can also carry risks. When self-worth is tied closely to athletic performance, setbacks like injuries or career transitions can lead to identity confusion: ‘Shit, who am I without my sports?’ During the session, we explored how to foster identity diversification – how young athletes can develop a multifaceted self that extends beyond their sports. Together with coaches, teachers, and practitioners, we discussed their future role in helping young athletes to build a 'dual sustainable career'.
